Privacy Policy

Volunteen is a student-created community project that helps Fremont-area high school students find volunteer opportunities and keep a personal record of their service hours. This policy explains what information we collect, why we use it, and the choices you have.

Information we collect

• Google account information: When you sign in with Google, we receive your name, email address, and a unique account identifier. We use this information to create and secure your Volunteen account.
• School information: You may select the high school you attend during onboarding.
• Volunteer-hour records: If you log hours, we store the service date, number of hours, activity description, and any opportunity you connect to the entry.
• Signup records: For opportunities that use Volunteen registration, we store the opportunity, signup status, timestamps, and confirmation information connected to your account.
• Suggestions: If you suggest an opportunity, we store the organization name, link, description, optional contact information, review status, and the account that submitted it.
• Authentication and technical information: Our service providers may process cookies, session information, IP addresses, and basic device or request logs needed to operate, secure, and troubleshoot the service.

How we use information

We use information to:

• authenticate users and protect accounts;
• show your profile, school, hours, and signup history to you;
• operate opportunity signups, waitlists, and confirmations;
• review opportunity suggestions before they are published;
• send service messages, such as signup confirmations or reminders;
• maintain, secure, and improve Volunteen; and
• respond to questions, safety concerns, or legal requests.

We do not sell personal information, show targeted advertising, or use Google account data for advertising.

When information is shared

We use service providers to run Volunteen. Google provides account sign-in, Supabase provides authentication and database services, Vercel hosts the website, and Resend delivers transactional email. These providers may process information only as needed to provide their services and under their own terms and privacy policies.

Some listings send you to an organization's website, form, email, or phone number. Information you give directly to that organization is governed by its policies, not this policy. Volunteen does not automatically send your Google account information or personal hour log to an outside organization.

We may disclose information if reasonably necessary to comply with law, protect users, investigate abuse, or defend the security and integrity of Volunteen.

Data retention and your choices

We keep information while your account is active and for as long as it is reasonably needed to provide the service, maintain security, resolve disputes, or meet legal obligations. We aim not to keep personal information longer than necessary.

You may ask to access, correct, or delete your account information by emailing hello@myvolunteen.com. Some limited records may be retained when reasonably necessary for security, fraud prevention, or legal compliance.

Security

We use established service providers, encrypted web connections, account authentication, and database access controls intended to protect your information. No online service can guarantee perfect security, so please protect your Google account and report suspicious activity.

Students and children under 13

Volunteen is intended for high school students age 13 and older. It is not directed to children under 13, and children under 13 should not create an account or submit personal information. If you believe a child under 13 has provided personal information, contact us so we can investigate and delete it when appropriate.

Changes to this policy

We may update this policy when Volunteen's features or data practices change. We will post the revised policy here and update the date at the top. Material changes may also be announced through the website or email.
